So how about this idea:

Make it so when Slaking's HP falls below 50% its ability turns into Hustle.

No, you're dumb. Slaking has a BST of 670, that's the same kind of BST a mega could have. The difference is that megas cannot hold items. Slaking's compensation for its high BST is its ability, a mega's compensation for its high BST is the lack of holding items, which can mean a 25% reduction in raw damage due to lack of a Life Orb, or a large reduction in staying power due to lack of Leftovers, etc.
The issue is that Slaking's ability is too much. Rather than compensate for its high BST it makes it completely useless.
It's funny how Truant and Slow Start were added to balance a Pokemon that might be too powerful for its generation, but now we have broken shit like Megamom that basically makes Slaking and Regigigas worthless even without their abilities.
