they only lost the triple battle because ash used his level 1000 pikachu.
then sliggoo evolved before the double battle, and goodra just facetanked everything because it's a pseudo-legendary. there was no skill involved. i'm not saying ash couldn't have won with sliggoo using skill, but with goodra he didn't have to, so it wasn't a true display of skill.
the only fair fight they had was squirtle vs froakie, and tierno won.

I don't really think they're portraying what Alan's doing as completely positive. He threw away things to get where he is. That scene of him crossing paths with Ash (plus friends) while he's all alone is indicative of what they're going for.
Alan's going to be beaten by Ash and friends because he's alone and you can't take on the whole world alone. That's never going to be the moral lesson of a kid's show. Alan only has one pokemon to symbolize that he's taking on everything by himself. He literally took on 10 mega trainers with one pokemon. Ash has a team and friends to symbolize the opposite.
Alan will eventually realize that his ideal of protecting everyone by taking on every problem himself isn't feasible. It's downright crazy like how he thought he should fight primal legendaries by himself to stop them.
Instead of protecting someone by being strong enough to take on all problems yourself, the better way is to become stronger together so you can protect each other. It's why Manon insisted that she'll get stronger too.
