Honestly, functionality is the most important thing
People seem to want the absolute smallest towns in Pokemon to be Saffron-sized, and the biggest ones to be absolute metropolises. If they're not actually adding any more functionality, any more useful buildings in the town and so on, what's the point? Bigger towns might be more 'realistic' but it works well the way it is now.

It bothers me so much that Vaniville has such a nice design and OST, and then Route 1 also has such a nice design and OST but is only half a dick long. They could have at least pulled a Unova Route 1 and had a secrety side area you could only get to later with something hidden in it, like an overland path to Kiloude or something.

A major example of this would be the new Tales of games, like Xillia and Zestiria. They made the towns so much bigger but there they are still just as empty, only now it's more noticeable because there are so many houses you can't go into and people you can't talk too. It feels so barren, despite the fact they want it to feel bigger.
I'm much happier with smaller scale towns. Of course there's nothing wrong with bigger city's done well too.
