The anime is more accurate than most people seem to think. The animators have access to whatever concept art or design sketches made for the games so the way the Pokemon behave or look in the anime is usually if not always accurate to the games. The anime IS canon, it's just not the same continuity as the mainline games.
Also plenty of Pokemon say syllables of their names if you talk to them.
