I'm predicting Cut to be replaced by Night Slash once they decide to bring up Greninja's dark type. Remember that evolutions in the anime grant a Pokémon just one new move and it was Water Shuriken in this case. I'm not sure about if Ash and Dawn did combi attacks with some frequency though. I admit i skipped most of Pokemon DP episodes because of the 52 episodes gap between the 7th and 8th badge.

The only reason I don't put it up above Charizard is because Charizard has always been made out to be Ashs ace. The one who gets called back and relied on for the most important battles and is just raw power and speed.

Well, yeah. But Pikachu also has the most losses against tough opponents when it is needed most. Lost against Meowth in boots, Lucario/Riolu, Latios. Ash always has 1 mon who stands above the rest per Region, pikachu included. Greninja gets that role for Kalos and will earn a big win at some point that solidifies this. Either in the League or during TF. Pikachus biggest win was against M-Luke after having its health whittled down by Hawlucha and Fletchinder.

There's going to be a moment where he really needs to activate it, but when it comes it's not going to happen. Maybe Serena will get hurt, or Puni-chan taken by Alan, and Ash is going to feel responsible for it because he had the power to stop it but couldn't. That'll lead to him being angry or doubting himself and the eventual understanding arc where Ash learns to master the Syncro-Evolution.
