I think it's dumb that all gym leaders are one type.
Yes, I get that they're not supposed to win, just make sure you're practicing and force you to travel around the region. The journey is a bigger learning experience than the test. But none of them since possibly the GBA era have been hard enough to make me change my team to prepare for them, which I think is missing the point of the game.
There should be a region where they use 2 of one type, 2 of another (2 and 3 for gyms 5 and 6, then 3 and 3 for gyms 7 and 8), no repeats, no types that share a weakness.

You have to challenge the gym at night, go to the graveyard, enter a gym which is also a crypt, and have hex maniacs jump out at you from coffins. The crypt has rubble everywhere so you need to use rock smash and go through R/S/E style strength puzzles, then cross a flooded area with strong currents, diving, then finally ascend a waterfall to reach the leader.

In the fifth city on the region's largest lake, my gym is at the top of a huge art deco office building. The entrance can only be accessed by unlocking a second Fly location after some set-up plot on the ground floor. The player begins on the helicopter pad that was unlocked, with four floors of battles before getting to me on the top floor. The player’s goal is to navigate the maze on each floor to reach the other side, where there is a balcony with a bird-themed lift to the next story. The floors are themed after each of my 4 pokemon:
-The 1st floor is a maintenance floor filled with pushing fans and dangerous machinery.
-The 2nd floor is a fitness gym meets an aviary.
-The 3rd floor is an office setting has those shitty teleport pads.
-The 4th floor has no maze, and is just a straight shot to a double battle against my two top students.
At the top, the player has a dramatic rooftop battle with me and my Spikes/Whirlwind Skarmory, Unburden+Acrobatics Hawlucha, Swagplay Xatu, and Dragon Dance Gyarados. If they win, they get TM40 Aerial Ace.
And yes, I have my team, the entire gym's trainers' teams, and my postgame team planned out, because I put probably too much effort into these.
