swellow (i used him up until the E4, but i switched him with rayquaza who i caught before the E4)

Get Emerald 386, it adds tons of wild pokemon and changes trade evos into level-up evos so you can get all the pokemon on your emulated version. The added variety also makes it much more fun.

Slaking, Breloom, Camerupt and Grumpig worked pretty well for me. And a bit later in the game, you could get a Milotic and a Salamence.

I used Breloom, but I skipped Gen 3 and didn't play Emerald until a couple of years ago. I liked Breloom because I used him competitively. Even waited to evolve him in Emerald so he could learn Spore.
