The card unlocks the Mewtwo boss fight, which normally requires you to fulfill certain conditions in-game before being able to challange it. Basically if you're a lazy faggot who can't be assed to actually play the game you can use this card and unlock the Mewtwo fight right away.
This is why the Mewtwo amiibo card will be avaliable only in the first prints of the game - it doesn't do anything significant.

In terms of Venusaur, not sure what you meant. But if you meant marketing for the Gen 1 games (and the remakes), Venusaur was on the cover of Green and Leaf Green. In terms of XY, they definitely marketed Venusaur due to his Mega Evolution. Either way, RBY FRLG and XY allowed you to play as Venusaur if you so desired.
So I don't know what you meant with that comparison. I just want Swampert playable, plain and simple. And it does feel weird that I can play the other Hoenn starters, yet I can't play my favorite one.
