Most of them don't mix that well
They've been thinking about it seriously at least since gen 5, so they'll probably tease it until they need a new gimmick in gen 8 or 9. I'd be mildly surprised if Pokemon doesn't eventually introduce fusion as a major plot point considering that kids love fusion.
