Is he the least popular starter line?
I've never seen Torterra used in battle past his debut gen, and even among the starters that are competitively useless some like Delphox and Emboar have found their niche as pokepornstars. Nobody fights with Torterra and nobody spanks it to Torterra.

Definitely the best Sinnoh starter aesthetically. Its learnset is garbage though and having a few prominent weaknesses while being slow with little offensive output make it unviable in competition.

Honestly, I almost forgot Torterra existed a few days ago until I did my occasional "how is this Pokemon doing competitively" web surfing.
At a glance, its Attack and bulk are good, but not outstanding, and the only thing it really has going for it is a unique STAB.
I'd argue, however, that it's a thousand times more useful than Meganium as a whole.

if it can get a rock polish off, it can be devastating in NU
Torterra has a niche in VGC. It gets wide guard and can OHKO many bulky waters with Wood Hammer. Just pair it on a trick room team.
Outside of that, it's one of the neatest final evolutions.
Turtwig is shit but Grotle and Torterra are rad

It seems like people like it, it's not their favorite, it's not as bad as things like Typhlosion or Meganium
In a generation, a 7/10 won't get much attention when there's 721 Pokemon, starring several 10/10s that everyone raves about and a bunch of 1/10s that everyone gets angry about or are known for being forgettable, like Finneon and Skiploom.
Torterra is the middle child like Blastoise.
aesthetically one of my favorite starters and love using it in game, its just not good in competitive play

It's the best gen 4 starter design wise (maybe even the best overall), but he's probably got the worst competitive use out of all of them.
I'm a Waterfag but Torterra's the exception (though I never did pick it for my DPP playthroughs). Right now it's my favorite among all the starter final evolutions. I'm not fond of Grotle or Turtwig though.

Just imagine being on its back, chilling together. It's perfect.
It's a great design overall, but I always felt that the colours were too harsh and solid. It gives it an unnatural look that doesn't mesh well with it being a grass type.
