"Stalled" as in, the three fillers right after the first episode. I can't help but think they would've normally slotted them at the very least after Ash Greninja if not Terminus Cave itself since they did kinda kill the momentum at the start of the new series.
As for Terminus Cave, I don't think it's that quick. The climax will definitely take place in Lumiose City.
Terminus cave is where the gang will learn Puni-chan's power, and probably connect with Puni-chan's nightmare in the latest episode. From then on, it's the gang, especially Bonnie, trying their best to make Puni-chan stronger soit can beat its other halfwhile overcoming its fears.

Think about timetables though. We know that, with no 7th gen announcement and signs pointing to an extension of gen 6, Ash's time in Kalos is at least another year long, probably a year and a half more likely, that's a good swing of ~70 episodes at the minimum.
So in 70 episodes, Ash has to challenge the 8th gym leader, and wrap up the Team Flare Arc. In 70 episodes Ash could very well catch a Honedge, evolve it into Doublade, and then have a special episode where it stone evolves. It's not late-game at all, hell, Ash still had Chimchar at this point in DP.

Because Ash filling out his team a certain way is something that's happened every region. Even now, Ash has a flyer, a fire type, a water type, pikachu, and a wild card and all he is missing is a grass type.
