As someone who really loved Sky, but was sorely disappointed by the last title, I'm a little afraid to spend money on a game I won't want to play after a couple hours. Can't really afford that right now. Is SMD worth buying? I've seen really mixed reviews so I'd like /vp/'s input before I make my decision.

Did in RT. Did in Time/Dark but immediately regretted it with the only one portrait while the prior had more and the walking in place all night long. Didn't in Sky. Did in Gates but immediately regretted it for same reasons as Time/Dark except with standing in place instead of walking. Just did in Super and I'm glad there's portraits this time, but still standing in pace, so I'm unsure whether to reload to my save from before evolving or not.

Gummies were nice in Rescue Team, but it became way more of a grind in Explorers. Sky made it a bit better, but not much.

It'll fuel your love for strategy a lot more than the story, since Super's story kinda sucks. There are some good points in there, but on the whole it's arguably the worst story in the franchise. Rescue Team's story might have been really plain and mundane, but at least it wasn't badly plain and mundane, it was still good. Super's story is bad.

Like, when I was reflecting on it, I sort of wanted to call it an "action movie plot"? But that doesn't feel very fair, since while I don't watch a lot of action movies, I'd like to be optimistic and say that they probably do things better than Super does. But you're right, it does spectacle right and the actual plotting and story are just bad.

I tried to handwave it in Gates that because they were "older" they just got up a bit earlier, but the unvaried portraits killed it for me. So since at least you have portraits in Super with the partner being all smiley when you talk to them, I'm thinking of saving and sticking with middle evos because Dewott and Braixen are perfect together.

Not him butI found the parts leading up to the ending sadder than the ending itself. It was the cheesiest part of the whole damn story but I was crying during the whole don't give up! section.
I sort of wish they just used all caps for the negativity ball instead of mixed lettering, it sort of ruined the atmosphere for me.
Finally got the game after my friend got it as a gift.
Loving the fact that once you get the connection orb, you're free to do whatever in terms of teams, but I have a few questions. (I just got on the chapter with the ghost at the school)

Do missions regularly until you have a massive stockpile of Stayaway, Warp, Slumber, Confuse wands, like 100+ of each, throw them all in your bag plus a few Reviver seeds for security, then cheese it.

Well there are a couple parts in Sky where after a few daysyou're quite literally dragged into things no questions asked

Not in this way, no. There were times where it forced you into story missions, but those were few, far-between, and you always had ample leadup.
For example, the Expedition in Explorers. You got told about the Expedition in that game a while before it actually happens, and a different story-related mission occurs before it. You can't put the Expedition off once its time finally comes, but you can spend as much time as you like doing random missions and things while putting the other story mission off.
Anyone else hate traveling pokemon missions? They never hang around one room and you could waste a ton of hunger searching, especially in a harder dungeon.

They'd be better iftheir backstory wasn't a complete mess. The whole Mew business is way too confusing and it isn't explained well at all, and even after having people try to explain it it's all really stupid.
Their personality is pretty nice, but I liked them better back when they were a mischievous troublemaker at the start. They kind of went from "mischievous, headstrong and troublemaking but goodhearted" to "boring generic headstrong hero with no sign of his mischief or troublemaking from earlier". I really liked that the Gates partner seemed to genuinely care about the player the most of the partners, and they generally seemed to have their shit together most of the time. Made me like the Snivy line a lot more. Rescue Team partner has like no character, so they go last. Explorers and Super are both about equally good, but I liked the Explorers one more by the end, mostly because of Super's plot kinda going to shit by the end to me.

Sky Attack seems like it can hit from across the room, and goes through any number of targets in a line.
That means that when it crit and super effective killed most of my team in a hallway, it killed Riolu andArchen and Nuzleafin one shot. I somehow survived with 3 HP, and then Totter Orb'd to make my getaway.

I did the game with Pikachu/Fennekin. I'd say it was an average team--not too good, not too bad. Fennekin can really support you from behind with Ember/Pysbeam. Magnitude is the only real problem.

I just realized the Kalos starters only learn their signature moves in their final evolutions, and that really bugs me because I want to keep my partner a Braixen. And me as Dewott having my signature move and her not feels really wrong.
I actually feel like I'm starting to like the game a lot better now that I'm out of the constant linear story missions and into the postgame where I can just fuck around, but honestly I think getting through the story itself has just exhausted me. I really want to put this game down and go play something else, even another PMD that isn't so tiring, and I'm not sure I really want to come back to Super at all.
Part of me also wants to restart it and try a different team instead. Maybe Fennekin/Chespin this time, instead of Riolu/Oshawott.

Finally made it(after 2 failed rescue attempts of myself), but that was part of the problem, no good items on the ground. Only emeras they were giving me were things like the no-paralysis or confusion or no traps, see enemies, etc. No offensive ones. Also like no Oran berries or tiny reviver seeds. If anything, Gates and Super taught me that sometimes it's better to have a likeable character than an interesting one. All the development in the world didn't stop me from wanting to punch my SPMD partner in the face for the entire first third of the game.
