See, this is my problem with the ">not nicknaming your Pokemon" thing. THEY ARE FICTIONAL. They don't care whether you did anything for them or not, because they don't really exist. I'm not saying you shouldn't nickname them. If it helps you enjoy the game more, then by all means do it. It's in the game for a reason. But do it for yourself, not for a few bytes of data. If someone doesn't get anything out of nicknaming, then that's completely fine. They owe nothing to the game. People should play the game however they enjoy it, whether that means nicknaming or not.

In most playthroughs all my pokemon nicknames fit a theme, like lord of the rings characters or Lost characters or people I know irl. But I'm kind of running out of themes and there aren't a lot of shows/books with enough characters for how many Pokemon I end up running into so I might have to change things up.

I give mine usually just regular, mundane names that somehow rhyme with their original one. Like Rita the Ralts, Wally the Wailmer, etc.
Or, in some moments, I have nice ideas. One of my favourite mons is Chandelure and I called my EV trained, 5IV one "Ignaz F.". Bonus points for who gets the reference.
Sometimes I give them stereotypical or "gross" names. I have a female Goodra I call "Jizzy".
But then I have "traditions" in naming mons. My go-to Gyarados is always called "Nighögg". My Mewtwo I always call "!!!".
I don't nickname my in game team, but I do nickname my online mons unless it's a Nuzlocke.
