Chikorita and Squirtle have very poor movesets. I had Chikorita as my partner and I honestly just wanted to reset since she only learns poison powder, Synthesis and Magical leaf. It's fine if you want to choose them, just know this game is significantly harder than previous games. If you choose those two it'll be likely to be even more of struggle.

I picked Fennekin (and Totodile partner) and i have been having a pretty decent run.
Fennekin's Psybeam is super useful, hits from far away and has a confusion chance. And Totodile has GREAT coverage with Water, Ice and Steel right out of the gate. And gets Bite not too long afterwards.
I didn't have too trouble with the tutorial bosses thanks to having super effective damage on all of them

Much more difficult in some senses, mainly due to a lot of changes to mechanics. There's less of a sense of permanent progression, since leveling is slower and you can get IQ skills as equippable items, but they always disappear at the end of the dungeon, leaving you at square one most of the time.
Also like >>24692246 said, the game heavily pushes you towards recruiting Pokemon and using more mons than just your player and partner.
On the whole, I'd say that the game feels much, much more slanted towards the Mystery Dungeon elements than the previous games, which has both some good benefits and bad consequences. Personally I don't find it quite as fun or satisfying to play, but I'm still quite enjoying what there is to do.

So, uh, two questions.
One, why the hell did Chunsoft make the whole Serene Village section last so long? By Chapter 5 or 6 I was sick and tired of being stuck there and was desperately hoping that I'd get to join the guild soon, but nope! We still have to ease you into the Connection Orb mechanic because we like our tutorials in this game! The fact that it lasts so long was so annoying that I actively stopped caring about the story and was rushing through things in order to actually get somewhere.
Two, why, oh why, did Chunsoft decide to pull a Gates 2.0 andintroduce Dark Matter as a villain? They had a great series of rapid-fire plot twists going on right now.When Nuzleaf turned out to be the villain, I thought "oh crap, that's pretty good". When Yveltal appeared, I thought "oh shit, that's even better". And then when my partner and I actually got stoned, I thought "oh fuck, this is actually on par with Explorers".
And then they completely shit on those rapid fire plot twists by having one more that makes all of it null and void. Did they not realize how stupid and out-of-placethe Bittercoldwas last time? Are Chunsoft just strapped for ideas at this point?

Don't know how/why, but one of my befriended Pokemon "ate" an early weather looplet acquired.
It's just gone. I had Vulpix hold it then as the story progressed my 3rd slot in the party was taken up by a story character, no big deal, but when that was over and I was able to use Vulpix again the weather looplet was gone. I've searched my bags, the bank, everywhere.

I liked the beginning chapters and the bonding between the partner at first, but like I said, by the time Chapter 6 rolled around, I was ready to get out of town and have the actual plot start moving. Explorers was slow too, but at least there you joined the guild early on and you had access to all the mechanics from the near-get-go. Rank points, the bulletin boards, recruiting was introduced very quickly afterward, etc etc. In Rescue Team you started off with all that stuff from the very beginning after Tiny Woods. It took Super half the game to reach that point, and no, I don't want to hear people telling me "oh but the chapters after you join the guild are longer", because so far that's a total lie.
I enjoy slower-paced stories in general, a lot of people hate Explorers' start but I really love Explorers' pace from start to finish, but goddamn, Super actually managed to wear down my patience. It's a miracle.

Fennekin is best partner because of the range on Psybeam, I chose Riolu as MC and I only had a rough time in post game.
Though once I taught myself Earthquake, that whole dungeon became non-issue.

So I haven't gotten to play Super yet, but hearing about how it was going to interconnect all the previous games really got me excited for it. So I want to ask everyone some questions, though pls no spoil:
How much time passed between each game, and how much time between the games and Super?
Are the games ever referenced at all in a meaningful way? Like, instead of just having a character cameo ala Tales games or whatever, do they go like "hey, you're a human? hmm, i've heard of this happening before" or such?
How do all the different teams and stuff work together? Is the "Expedition Society" I heard about the society that governs rescue teams, exploration teams and the adventurers from Gates?
Well I died on the final boss and now I have to go through that all over again. I just had to run out of Reviver Seeds and all I had were Reviver Orbs.

I figured that most of the characters from previous games would be stuck in postgame content, sort of like what Explorers did with that Team Charm scenario, where you'd have a mission and meet up with some previous characters and you'd get to do stuff. What happens with Hydreigon? Does the whole Voice of Life stuff come into play again?

Sorta-kinda, but not really. A few of the cameo characters basically say that line word-for-word, but they just join your party and have no effect on the story. There are a few slightly more interesting uses of the cameos, such as theJirachifrom Explorers of Sky being a fairly significant side character.

Wait, how do you mean? I figured they wouldn't get in the way of the main story, since even I know that if they tried to tie all the games together that way it'd be really sucky. But do you mean they don't do anything even outside of the story, too? Like, they have their own little short-story-sidequests like the postgame content in Rescue and Explorers, right? Like the Team Charm thing I mentioned, or the thing with the Latis in Rescue postgame.

They basically just give bulletin board missions. You can find them wandering around the city and get a few lines of dialog from them, too. (there are also some neat things, like Emolga's mission is to escort him to Dunsparce, who's lost in a dungeon)
They're mostly just cameos and nothing else. It's kind of interesting to see what they're up to these days, though. For example, Cranidos talks about how he used to run a box-opening shop, then trails off wondering how Mincinno is doing.
