The current VGC meta does need a ban on megas and legends, but there are definitely creative teams out there that aren't staplemons. And saying the game is based purely on luck and gimmicks is completely undermined by the ladder system. LoL is the same way. If you win 53% of the time, you'll still be higher rating than others, which means you know what it takes to get a victory.
