Could you explain to me what's so bad about the metagame that you need Smogon's rules? All the complaints about them make me wonder why don't you just play the game as it is if the "fix" just causes more problems...

Some people don't have a 3DS so they have no other option but to play in Showdown, where Smogon's OU is the main tier. They don't particularly play in there just because they think the "vanilla" meta is broken.
Also, most of the complains come from people that don't even play by their rules, so don't take them seriously.

If you don't play competitively there's nothing wrong with playing official rules at all.
