More pokémon don't mean that they have to be weaker. That's only true for average trainer NPCs, but not the important ones. Look at the pokémon of gen V and VI gym leaders, their pokémon aren't particularly stronger than previous gym leaders despite having fewer pokémon. Fuck, some of of the gen VI teams even lack full movesets, you need to go back to gen I to see something similar.
