Gengar is the most overrated Ghost Pokémon to ever exist. It's design is so bland compared to other ghosts like Dusknoir, Banette, Trevenant, Mismagius, and Froslass.

Nigga looks like he has testicles on his face. Nasty. It's also really slow, so you'll be going last even in-game, and unlike other slow shit it doesn't feel like a wrecking ball in exchange. It works, sure, but it's not even as fun as a real nigga like Graveler. Not evolving until level 38 also costs significant in-game fun points, since that's often gym 6 territory.

Sometimes, simplicity is better.
Trevenant is conceptually fantastic but the end result is visually unappealing.
Gengar doesn't have to rely on an outside style theme, it's visually appealing just as a ghost.

Incorrect. The only Ghost move it could get STAB from was Lick, which has abysmal base power.
Gengar was useful because it was fast and powerful, had a decent movepool, and most importantly was able to absorb the incredibly ubiquitous Normal moves. Being able to safely switch into Hyper Beam or Explosion was incredibly useful.

Actually Gengar and Haunter are Ghost/Poison type.
And Charizard and Lucario are also quite different!
Fire/Flying and Fighting/Steel, respectively.
