Honestly after playing Gen 2 again recently I've noticed a HUGE lack of pokemon early on. Like up until the 8th badge or so, there really aren't alot of pokemon for you to choose from or catch. Seriously, playing the game over again, you kind of have to take the same pokes since most of them suck and there are very little to choose from that are decent.
That's my main problem with gen 2, just a lack of variety in pokemon before the second set of badges. It's extremely annoying as I love the pacing and progression of the game's story but the lack of variety in pokes make it a chore to play through again with the same over-used pokes. Gen 3 also kind of suffers from the same thing. At least with Gen 1 there was a huge variety of pokes to choose from even from the start. Not only was there a big variety but most of them were viable options to use in the long-run. That's just not the case with Gen 2 or 3.

Same. My 3rd or 4th run a decade ago had me trying Noctowl instead of Pidgey, Hoppip instead of Bellsprout, etc but they all seem lacklustre. Even if you take into consideration Hoppip has a different role, it doesnt matter much when you dont have access to a full movepool yet while your opponents have good sets. I never finished the run.
Same thing with gen 3 and 4. The problem is the starters are too strong compared to everything else. No need to bother with shitmons when you have a beast like swampert or infernape for example
Completely agreed (but nostalgia makes me love it still). XY are my favorite games in the series because of the massive amount of Pokemon available early on. I also like to restart my games a lot, so XY's lack of decent post-game isn't a huge deal to me. But yeah, having a different team every file you play on makes the game so much more enjoyable. I never used Mienfoo in B/W but I'm loving using one in XY currently.
HG/SS finally got a wider selection once you hit the safari zone, which was a great improvement on G/S/C.
I always went with starter, graveler, lanturn, ampharos, jumpluff, espeon/umbreon. With the starter and espeon carrying
Hell I made the best with what I had as a kid. My team consisted of:

Graveler
Sandslash
Nidoking
Umbreon
I didn't give two shits that my team sucked. I still defeated Red and was da champ. There such a casual audience to this game.

These games were meant to be played via different mechanics like day/night, bug hunting contests, new evos, headbutting trees. Plus trading between the original carts to get their version exclusives. I hate to say it but these games weren't meant to be stand alone. Making half the steel types trade evo only, and only giving us 3 dark types of which one is only available in the post-post game was a mistake
