Still just working on the "average" Emerald reskin. With that said, I've been planning on taking advantage of my CFW and playing Undertale at the same time so things are going slow, but at least I can kind of see something playable forming.

Working on a quasi-fakemon game in Essentials. For an Essentials game it's overambitious as shit, but I've got a lot of RPG Maker experience under my belt. I've inserted all the fakemon and got a lot of the region done.
I wanted to release it when it was done, but I don't know when that'll be, so I've decided to just bite the bullet and release unfinished portions of it like everybody else.
I'm working to push out a 3-gym demo before the end of the month. Be on the lookout for it.

Not even hacking, just making a world map in MS Paint cause I have nothing better to do.
Still a WIP, too, gotta add all the decorations like trees and stuff to it, and different types of terrain.

Might eventually create the towns and stuff using the ingame graphics as well, if I have nothing better to do.

I'm just starting out with essentials for the first time, but I'm pretty competent when it comes with programming. I have a few questions regarding it, since you guys seem experienced:

1. I noticed the sprites by default are 160x160, but are actually 80x80 sprites scaled up. If I wanted to instead make a sprite like pic related, would it affect anything? I've tested battles with this size and it doesn't look weird at all, so I was wondering if it may have problems elsewhere.

2. How do you guys go about mapmaking, as a general preference? Do you feel better if it was planned out beforehand, or do you just go crazy with the dimensions you're given? I'm a horrible mapmaker, so in a sense both of them seem equally challenging.

3. Between gen 3 and gen 4, which aesthetic do you prefer in terms of over world's and tilesets? Essentials seems to be defaulted to gen 3, which would be easier to sprite and tile with, while gen 4 has better looking everything, but I'd have to change a bunch of graphics. Should I stay safe and go with gen 3, or be ambitious with gen 4?

There's nothing to worry about in this regard.
>2. How do you guys go about mapmaking, as a general preference? Do you feel better if it was planned out beforehand, or do you just go crazy with the dimensions you're given? I'm a horrible mapmaker, so in a sense both of them seem equally challenging.
I just wing it. The safest thing to do is start from the bottom up; first grass, then trees, then rocks, etc.
>3. Between gen 3 and gen 4, which aesthetic do you prefer in terms of over world's and tilesets? If you can find a premade Gen 4 tileset, go with that. But if this is your first project, stick with Gen 3 so you don't have to change too much stuff.

>>
>>24677069
You mean how it wont let you evolve Pokemon like Golbat to Crobat?
The easiest way is to just give the player the National Pokedex ASAP, then it'll remove the lock.
>>
>>24677157
Cool senpai, any way to do that through gen three editor?
>>
>>24677069
>>24677157
http://www.pokecommunity.com/showpost.php?p=8525645&postcount=306 is a more elegant solution, imo.

But if you want to just go the National Pokédex route, you'll need to include special 0x16F in a script somewhere, most easily along with setflag 0x829 (aka when the player would get the regular dex).

My entire life I've wanted nothing more than to make a Pokemon game, but I never have so I'll be going into this completely cold. No idea how to code or any of that shit. Not sure if you even have to.

Last question, what's the easiest game to hack?
>>
>>24686548
From what I've red, FireRed.
You and me both, I mean I've started before, but it was awhile back. You've got to get used to some terms and stuff, it really doesn't seem bad though. Scripting is going to be a kicker to learn.

>Scripting is going to be a kicker to learn.
I imagine this will be the wall I hit and won't go further.

My game will probably be riddled with awful glitches.

If only there was a "Pokemon region maker" akin to something like Mario Brothers Maker or whatever, or the map maker in Time Splitters 2.
>>
>>24686556
Heh. It was the wall I hit too.

I just want balanced mons, mild difficulty, and a challenging endgame. I'm shit for story, so when it comes to that, I'll probably just lurk one of the fanfic threads and shamelessly rip something.
I could also do some werk with those "puzzles" they call gyms
>>
>>24686563
Not to stroke my own dick, but I think I'd be both adept at creating a decent story and balancing mon, or at least making them viable for a vastly increased in-game difficulty.

I wanna try this so bad, but I have so much stuff on my plate and the coding shit sounds like a pain in the fucking asshole.

If only there was that region SIM.

>City maker option
>Route option
>Cave / House option

>textures for each
>landmarks like rocks or Pokemon grass you place like tiles from a menu
>clicking on grass or water to select from the list of all the Pokemon which kinds could appear there and with what frequency

it could be fucking glorious, I dunno, it would be hard with scripted events like your rival appearing wherever and saying shit, I dunno it could be done, but I'm just rambling at this point

Scripting really isn't that hard once you get the hang of it.
If you're getting into ROM hacking, I highly suggest starting with Advance Map (1.92) and messing around with it.
Learn about movement permissions, the block editor (not that important early on), connection editor, etc. (I suggest using A-map 1.95 for this, as it lets you view the connection as you are making it.) Reason I said you should use 1.92 is because 1.95 never came out of its beta stage and MIGHT have some bugs. 1.92 is safer in that regard.
Now, if you want to edit text, you have 3 options;
A. Get a specific program for it, like Advance-text (This can be hard to run, needs comdlg and comctl dependencies)
B. Edit it in a script editor of choice. (I recommend XSE). If you're going to Write longer text than the default one was, it needs to be repointed, so just find some free space with HackMew's FreeSpaceFinder and repoint it manually.
C. Edit it manually in a Hex editor (not recommended, takes a long time)
Now, I've only gone through 2 different aspects (3 if you count the scripting bit) of ROM hacking, but there's so much more to it.
There are lots of wonderful tutorials out there, you just need to find them.
Hope this was helpful.

Way too many to be sane. This widdles down the essentials though.

Advance map is your map editor.
XSE is your script editor.
G3T is a multipurpose tool.
Hopeless Trainer editor is a better trainer editor than G3T's.
Advanced Series is your Pokemon sprite editor group.
G3HS extends the Pokedex and does tutor editing, but it's unstable at everything else and unwieldy.
Freespace finder finds FF bytes for you so you don't write over existing data.

Also handy: a hex editor and possibly an ASM compiler.

Yes.

>>
i feel kind of bad for giving up on pokemon brown

i dont know why anyone in their right mind would make a gen 1 hack without fixing all of the broken shit
>>
>>24697501
It was made in 2004, anon. I mean there are several updates to it years later (I think it got a big 2014 update to prime it for Prism compatibility, plus one in 2009), but it was pretty much the first "big" Pokémon hack and they didn't know how to do everything we know now. It's impressive that it managed to accomplish what it did at the time, complete fan region, expanded Dex, custom music, etc. Most old hacks you find are shit like minor graphics and text hacks and maybe some map hacks that break the game because Oak's script doesn't take you into the building so you can't progress without walking through walls without a Pokémon.

Keep in mind I'm saying this as someone who didn't get interested in hacks until the 2010s and I'm just looking back in hindsight with minimal experience with the scene back then.
