I never actually played one until maybe 2009 when I discovered emulation and played Plantinum, the team ended up like this.

Diamond. Save fucked up so my progression was wonky AF. I had a Lucario at lvl 58 but it turned back into a Riolu egg, I hatched it at the League but it said Route 213 or something instead.
Team was Torterra lvl 73
Lucario lvl 55 after grinds.
Azelf lvl 52 or something.
2 Gravelers lvl 44
Golbat lvl 46
Steam roll with Torterra, use everything as reviver fodder.

Gold, I barely remember. I only know of three Pokemon for sure. Typhlosion, Scizor, and Dragonite. I forget the others.
I'm pretty sure most kids beat the League for the first time just using their starter. For me it was Blastoise, I soloed Pokemon Blue with that guy.
I know I had a blastoise, a gengar my cousin helped me evolve, a mewtwo I scammed someone out of in exchange for a meowth, and a Mew I caught at level 2 on the first route because I had a gameshark. The rest is hazy as fuck.
I remember having a chansey but can't recall if I got it from cerulean cave or safari zone. I also owned a fuckton of missingnos so one or two of them might have been involved.
Also unrelated but Mew was the ultimate hm slave back then. Little fucker could learn everything.
