There almost no chance they edited the actual rom. It's not as simple as you'd think. It would take them more time and effort than they feel it's worth for something like this. The wireless functions are a thing likely from an easily built Link Cable emulator that spoofs the game to thinking a cable is envolved.

I expect we will see this from genwunners in general when it comes out. Even at the height of the craze(which lasted ages) a lot of people recognized the games didn't have a whole lot to do. Even before Battle facilities ever appeared I always felt like Gen 1 and 2 were lacking in endgame.
RBY followed a pretty typical RPG format. After you reach the end of the story, there's nothing much there to keep you playing longer. For those without anyone to trade with, I expect people won't log more than like 24 hours on it.
The main story itself is okay but the game is dated as hell, I mean these games are most likely going to be played in full black and white on the emulator. Normies are going to drop this shit so hard.
