Hard to tell without knowing what kind of hardware it will run on. If Nintendo drops handhelds by the end of this console generation (due to mobile cannibalising the sales and so on) we might actually see the first ever console Pokemon game.
If 3DS continues to 2017 we might see another gen V scenario with the game being released on the same hardware as the previous gen. It will probably be less revolutionary as far as gameplay mechanics and graphics are considered, so they will probably put more focus on things like story and worldbuilding.
