In the early 2000s everyone I battled against used all three Kanto starters and a bulky tank. I just assumed that was what was good competitively back then. Given I most of the time won because that was the kind of team I usually prepared for. I just recently got back into Pokemon because of emulators and such.

Amnesia Slowbro is God. Amnesia in gen-1 is the equivalent of 2 Calm Minds glued together today.
Amnesia Snorlax is pretty good too.
Zapdos pretty much required everyone to use Rhydon or Golem to check it. Once those are removed it could sweep teams all on its own.
