most of /vp/ was born in 2000's, so they have no idea what your talking about.
I'd say there are tons of shitty looking old cards as well, but the ones that look good look so much better than what we have now
if you wanted a reason as to why, blame digitalization. Probably 0% of the new arts are hand drawn, they just won't feel the same
also that light dragonite is super cute
They tend to have more varied art styles, kind of hit and miss for me, some are butt ugly but theres also some really awesome ones.
Most of the cards nowadays look good, but none have that wow factor some of the more stylised cards have.
Except for double crisis those look better then the original magma/aqua expansion cards by a wide margin, double crisis isn't stylised but something interesting is happening in pretty much all of their cards.

This was actually my favorite part about the older cards. A lot of really nice art that was mostly hand drawn. I dont mind most of the newer cards, but a all the cg ones just feel shallow. Especially those EX cards

I love some of the newer art, but really some of my favorites are still mostly the original ones or the dark/rocket/trainer variations. love some of the clay art cards even though they're kinda dumb, and some of the new ex cards are pretty amazing looking

Foil cards do that. It's hard to avoid outside of hard plastic sleeves. Admittedly, though, that's probably what he should have sleeved them in.

yeah I have some of them in hard sleeves, I still actually use these cards to battle with and stuff though I don't give a fuck about keeping them mint, I have kept them for the entertainment and joy they give me not the collector value, only ones in hard cases are some japs, my ancient mew, german muk, and some other random ones mostly jap ones I don't battle with tho
I just miss how certain holographic effects looked in the old sets.

Ancient Mew is literally the last foil you would ever need to use a toploader for. I have several of them.
Not keeping them in mint condition isnt that bad, a few in my collection are kinda beat up. Especially the original foils where the top layer of paper didn't stick too well to the foil underneath.
I still try to make a bit of effort in keeping my cards nowadays though, especially since I dont ever use them for battling or anything.

I always have shit luck on blisters and could never be assed to buy a whole box.
So I usually stuck to ebay sniping. A lot easier to just buy the cards I like at a few bucks a piece than burning through a hundred bucks for that one Blastoise. A lot of noncompetitive and non-EX/Star/shiny/whatever the new flavor card is now are actually fairly cheap. I just go around looking for art I like or those complete sets of some series where zero cards are actually worthwhile.
Back before I started dumping all my free cash on car/girlfriend/student loans.
