Think about it though. Greninja would feel so distraught that Ash would train harder than ever before to make his Greninja powerful and overcome its weaknesses and then conquer Sawyer and Alain when he rematches them. It would be the perfect way to take advantage of the whole "bond" situation, because bonds grow stronger when mistakes are resolved, right? If I recall correctly, Ash also went through a bonding phase with his Sceptile in the Battle Frontier arc.
