Not really, what differentiates Pokemon from those two are the different types of interactive media (the games and the card game). The fact that the franchise is centered around the games gives Pokemania a different feel from the crazes of today.

it's difficult, because Red and Blue were amazingly different and new at the time. They had charm that the others didn't have, you were just a boy who happened to eventually take on a crime boss organisation using your quirky companions. There's a little magic that Gen I and Gen II will always have that the newer Generations probably will never achieve. I admit, standing today they're garbage ( HG / SS are my personal favourites ) but you have to agree. yes they really did try with B / W, they tried to re-do Red and Blue using exclusively the generation's available pokemon and maybe appealing to the way this age of teens and children think with the Truth / Ideals, N also could possibly appeal to growing age of pacifistic vegen chill out people. But what do I know, I'm an alcoholic.
