Why don't we have more combo moves like the Grass/Fire/Water pledge moves having a field effect when combined?
It would make doubles and triples a lot more interesting, it would maybe give some use to some of the moves with low BP and it'd make VGC a lot more varied.
GF is too lazy to make their own official format more interesting.

You could technically count things like Helping Hand + Attack or Beat Up + Justified as combos too, and they're usually more creative that way anyways.

They're gimmicky because they're the only moves in the game that can be combined to have a secondary affect.
If GF added a lot more moves, or edited some of the previous ones to include secondary effects like these, then they wouldn't be gimmicky.

problem with the pledges is that you only use one of them if both pokemon attack with one.

I don't think they decided that. I think the doubles format was imposed by TPCi (they actually state that's it's because time constraints), so the format in general is just another gimmick for Game Freak.
