Its not so much a rougelike as it is a dungeon crawler that said for how basic it is it is still fairly clunky. Especially how things can happen off screen and slow your progression to a crawl.

It probably never was developed that far, but if I had to take a guess, she'd have done something to assist the player again.
Wes would have made a much more exciting boss than just repeating the 'short old man who helps you at the beginning is the bad guy' thing, but even without that, he should have been the final boss of either Orre Colosseum or Mt. Battle. XD's Mt. Battle even has an opponent near the end who literally had the team he most likely would have used, Espeon/Umbreon plus the beasts.
