Favorite grounds type. It's pic related, with Sandslash, Steelix and Nidoking as seconds.
As for Gen I. Golem was slighty faster and could take a resisted special attack if needed, also, it can blow itself out and give you space to a safe switch.
Rhydon on the other hand, hits consistently harder than Golem, and with Body Slam being an TM in that time, it could pick some key paralysis and then finish the opposing Pokémon with either Earthquake or Rock Slide.
Reminder that Rhydon's EQ is the third stronger move in the game in terms of raw power as for Gen I. The first being a triple tie between the stronger elemental attack from the birds, and the second being Mewtwo's Psychic.

And I'm an idiot, I forgot Hyper Beam, Self destruct and Explosion.
But those can't hit for SE damage and all three of them have huge drawbacks (Hyperbeam can be worked around in Gen I at least)

Golem was the focus of my self destruct deck. Gen 1 tcg on the schoolyard was a lot of fun. also a major bro in my first game (leaf-green, because I had to buy my own console off a measly 1 euro allowance the week)

Ground isn't my favorite type, but I can recognize the Pokemon euivalent of a meat grinder when I see it.

Favorite are Flygon and Swampert, both were the cornerstones of my original Ruby team and I love them to death for it.

I did the same with a Machoke in Ruby. Serebii's page said "Link Cable" and I thought that was some rare item that was on top of Sky Pillar. Needless to say I never evolved that Machoke, but I got Rayquaza, so yay
