I don't care if I get called out for it, but Cynthia is my favorite. In my opinion, she does everything a good champion should. You might call her a Mary Sue, but she actually shows up throughout the game and has a pretty cool team to back her up. She's like Zinnia in that she's involved with the region's mythology and has a mysterious background without coming off as an annoying asshole.
In terms of general championness:
Cynthia ≥ Blue = Steven > Diantha = Lance > Alder > Wallace > Iris
I like Diantha a lot but it's probably just because I have a boner for her and she reminds me of Cynthia. Steven and Lance would be better if they weren't written so heavy-handedly since they come off as being autistic. Blue does his job perfectly, but he falls short to Cynthia because she does a better job at being the unattainable "perfect trainer" image.

Favorite team is probably Steven, Steel types are pretty rad. Wallace is also pretty cool, as against certain teams he can really show you how much water types can destroy you.
Sadly I just don't like Cynthia as her team in every game is tryhard. Nice character, I just don't care for her.

Blue is objectively the best, as he's a villain the player has the most emotional connection with. He's a constant recurring obstacle which is cemented by him stealing the championship before you, and he has a team comprised of the best pokes in the region.
Lance is lame because he's more of a flying trainer than he is a dragon-type.
Steven is average, strong/thematically fitting team and all, but his minimal role in the plot means he doesn't have much narrative strength backing him.
Wallace is absolute shit. Literally just shoehorned in because they felt they needed a different champion to make Emerald more unique.
Cynthia is same tier as Steven, maybe a bit higher if only because she has a more frustrating, varied team.
Alder is central to the plot, has a dimension of wisdom/experience/humanity adding to his depth, and a team of underrated pokes that can still kick your ass.
Iris is only slightly less shoehorned than Wallace, and has a harder team to beat.
Diantha is just below Steven and Cynthia, if only because she's completely lacking involvement in the plot, and her team is lame (two dragon-types and a Gourgeist??).

I see a lot of hate in this thread for Iris and Diantha but also a lot of love for Alder. Iris I cannot agree with the hate; yes she is a mediocre choice as champion and it probably should have been Marshall, BUT despite Gamefreak's choice they execute perfectly. Her music theme suits her and the Championship role, being a child she dresses like a princess to show off as champion but she ends up looking like a child playing dress-up, she's present in the show acting progressive but they want her to be a surprise so her appearences are minimum. As much as I hated the idea of Iris being champion, I think Gamefreak did a great job executing on the choice and giving her a great team.
As for Alder, I'm not a fan; he's suppose to be the wise, wandering hobo champion that wants to have fun but he fails in every way. He's the only champion that loses to the villain; he has a family apparently but never mentions them, he lost his first partner but that never ends up meaning anything. Alder's appearence in the anime was just incredibly embarrassing on all counts. His theme is the worst amongst all the champions; his protege Marshall loses to Iris too and he just remains Elite 4. And the kick in the teeth is he clearly should be a Bug type master but his PWT team just leaves him with Volcarona.
Diantha sucks too but at least she's not a total failure like Alder.

I agree with everything you said about Iris and Steven, not convinced about Alder though.
Alder's entire image is that of the displaced champion. He's there for tradition and security, which makes Team Plasma beating him all the more daunting and emotional. Thematically, he is a distortion of the image all Pokemon trainers want to be. Sure it sounds great being the champion, but the partner who got him there died, and now he's pretty much obsolete in the face of the new generation. The whole message behind his character is that things fade, that nothing, including glory, lasts forever, which is a unique departure from the typical Gamefreak "love ur pokeman and you'll be the best" message.
Adding even more to Alder's characterization is the way GF's treatment of his character mirrors their treatment of the series. Before BW we had a well-established tradition. BW breaks this tradition by locking away all old pokemon to the post-game, and introduces a huge degree of power creep that makes a lot of old tactics thoroughly outdated. Alder is GF acknowledging that it's time to move on from past gameplay concepts and embrace an ever-changing metagame.

Iris is the worst. On top of being a bland choice (the first Dragon champ was a cop out too) her theme is just ear-rendingly awful. I know it's supposed to sound like something a sparkly Disney princess would make up but it sounds like someone just mashed on their Casio and called it done. It doesn't sound like battle music, it doesn't even sound like a character theme, it's just noise. Diantha pulls off the girly-girl champion thing much better, and that's without covering herself in heaps of ribbons.

I can understand why a lot of people put Iris on the last place. She was shoehorned and her lack of presence made her bland as fuck: basically a missed opportunity as big as Alder was.
But her theme, ear-rendingly awful?

My absolute favorites are Cynthia and Steven Stone without any doubt, Blue comes second because he is the ideal competitive rival concept, especially appreciate the FRLG Blue.
Favorite Steven is the Gen 3 and Gen 4 one, where Lance is mostly a side helping hand character Steven gets more space in the main character's life beside helping you, just like Cynthia does in Gen 4 and Gen 5.
Cynthia is very similar to Steven, both charming, young, attractive and clearly more than just champion title holders in their respective games and features, both guide you through the story while telling you about the regional lores and Pokemon. Both happen to have interesting and balanced teams too. Cynthia in Platinum has most likely the best and most balanced team between all the champions, maybe Blue being the direct second competitor.
I only diskile how they ruined Steven's team in Gen 6 ORAS, the rematch team is as disappoint as Diantha's one, truly one of the worst rematch / edit teams ever, instead of getting more challenging it gets worse. Even without a proper rematch team in Gen 3 RS his Ancient Power RNG mons were more competent and annoying than the shitty coverage Mega Metagross and Carbink it got, and the Aerodactyl completely out of place.
Cynthia only had her team partially nerfed in Gen 6 BW2 with the Braviary and Eelektross regional flavor additions.
I can see why people ship Cynthia x Steven Stone, it's like they are made one for each other.I think Cynthia kinda fucks everything is on her sight tho, regardless of gender and age.
I wonder if Sycamore and Cynthia know each other seeing how both have a female Garchomp and Rowan in common, and usually research all the lore and Pokemon related things too.

Blue was a very good rival and he worked well as a champion. A good team and I liked that even though he lost against you every time he mananged to beat the elite 4 before you.
Lance was cool and badass but his team was not very varied (3 fucking Dragonites), also the interaction in the story.
Steven (I only played ORAS) has this very elegant cool look compared to Lance's powerful cool look. Decent team. Quite a good champion.
Cynthia is the coolest and best champion. Great, powerful and varied team and she had a little bit interaction in the story but not too much. But the final battle of the elite 4 was spectacular.
Can't remember much about Iris and Alder. I found Iris to be quite decent.
Diantha was decent. Pretty good looks and a decent team but not anything too memorable.
