Why is Grass such ass?

Maybe if Spore went to more grass types they'd be more popular. As it stands pure grass is a horrible type. Mega Venusaur got lucky as a defensive behemoth with Thick Fat.

It's not a bad type at all. It's just a lot of fun to cry and whine about how your type is no good. GF was smart enough this generation to balance out the types so that Dragon-lovers, Bug-lovers, and Poison-lovers could do this. It's really easy to say that people can complain about how bad their favourite type is no matter how the game is balanced, but I appreciate GF's extra effort.
I still think Grass has it better than Ice typing.
all in all there's really only 3 viable ice types to use in battle. Weavile, Mamoswine, and Cloyster if you manage to set up shell smash.
beyond that you're not finding anything that's bringing anything to the table for a team.
at least ice type moves are excellent, just not coming from Ice type mons.

It's bizarre to me how you mention Cloyster but neglect Kyurem-B. Also if we wanna stretch it a little, M-Obama is somewhat viable with certain teambuilds and Froslass is a unique hazard setter and (anti-)lead which I'd much rather use than Cloyster.

Despite being complete crap on paper with all those weaknesses and resisting types Grass actually holds very useful niches in being the sole cockblock to Water types (resisting and SE) and one of the two existing ones to Ground types (also resisting and SE; the other being Flying that's just immune to it), as well as possessing good exclusive support moves in Spore and Leech Seed. So while a monoGrass team is indeed going to be struggling a lot, having a Grass type in your regular team can prove a blessing in certain matchups.

This. Fire is only more popular because people are too lazy to think defensively and so instead they just rush and go offensive. It's the reason why Meganium is the least popular starter overall.

I use it to set up screens and generally annoy in doubles. It works well enough. Here's one of my favorite battle spot matches with it.
