I found it in a donation and I took it home to play it. It's still a fun game although I kind of miss using the Missingno cheat. I still choose Charmander in this game.
Excluding the better box art with FR, it also has better exclusives than LG.

I had Leaf Green first. Then my brother's Fire Red.
Then some kid gave me his Chinese or Japanese Fire Red, couldn't tell you the difference. The cartridge was grey, though.
My guess is, like me, they went with the color they liked more. I really like both colors and I already had red before.
Because it had to compete with the version that had a big scary fire dragon on the cover.
