Pikachu initially was just your "plain qt creature" that appealed to boys and girls. It took him a few changes to turn in THE PIKACHU, a character with a personality of it's own.

I'm pretty sure the one in my image was the last one, it was released in the west in 2008. Don't know when it was released in Japan though.
From my understanding, Hamtaro's entire anime/manga franchise ended in the early 2000s, but he continues to live on in merchandise as "Hello Kitty for kids who like hamsters".
