I don't watch the anime (any more, I think I dropped out at around the Battle Frontier arc).
I can't take it seriously as long as Ash is the main character. He was the main character already when I was in primary school; his design has only changed for the worse since, and if he's now presented as “cool” it's a total joke seeing how utterly incompetent he was for a whole decade and a half of still making beginner mistakes and not deveolping the least.

Fucking BW nothing, for all the faults that season has, the Pokedex isn't one. The guy posting the dex gifs is dumb, he's been scanning the same Pokemon in every fucking region, just like we do in the games. It's not like he doesn't recognize them either.

If anything, him suddenly being competent is too radical a change. One day an idiot, the other day a smogonfag.
They should either have replaced him, or written one or two story arcs where he's forced to take battling more seriously and to git gud to explain this shift.
But as far as I know there was no such thing, so now all of a sudden this former retard has epic battles with dynamic camera perspectives and fancy special effects. It just comes across as cringy.

In a visual medium like anime, looks are part of a character though. And if he looks identical to a character who is canonically himself, and who was until very recently a lot dumber, then the sudden jump (or rebound) to a competent trainer comes across as mary-sue-ish. The stupid kid suddenly got good and now he's cool and strong and uses a cool ninja frog! That's character progression for children.
