I don't give a shit about the ladder system, the whole setup is just a well-done accessible simulator.
I don't think many people on it take the competitive aspect as seriously as you think they do. Personally I use a mix of good Pokemon and my favorites, which generally overlaps. Sometimes I force an ingame bro shitmon onto my team just because I like it. Sometimes I carry a pokemon from showdown to ingame because I find it endearing kicking so much ass in battle.
