sticking with fan favorites like charizard and lucario is just the safe bet and shows that they're worried about the game succeeding, and not willing to take way too much risk in making a fighting game.

It's unique in that there are two phrases, a field phase which plays like naruto, and a close range phrase which plays like traditional 2D fighter. Overall I was pretty iffy when I first heard of it myself but gameplay videos have completely sold me over. I just hope it gets more Pokemon that arent the same marketing whores everyone is bored of. Suicune and Weavile were a good start.

Lucha-Chu mainly utilizes Electric attacks like Electroweb and Shock Wave, as well as some iconic Pikachu moves like Double Team, so I doubt Hawlucha would be merly a clone.
By the way, the recent balance patch really mixed things up. Gengar is now considered a top tier character, while Luchachu went from slow, weighty shitter to combo-boosting demon of doom.
