What you're saying is true, but movies have no input from you so it's not like the games where raising your own team and battling opponents is a huge part of why people like it. The story is pretty much all it has to stand on. Well that plus pretty animation which they usually have covered.
It'd be nice to have a movie with a some heart to it though. I mean they do kinda try that but usually it's so shallow, even for a kid's movie.

I don't know why you guys have such an issue with OSfags. I don't agree with this "hurr Ash is overglorified" shit but I definitely agree OS had better emotional moments than most of pretty much every other series. The series hasn't had moments like the standoff against Spearow, Butterfree leaving, or Ash keeping warm for a long time now.
Competent Ash is great, I just wish they could get that emotional connection right again. Only time I think they matched it a few times was in DP. They kinda try with stuff like the Flabebe episode but they don't really come close.

They try to be, and hell, who knows, maybe 10 years from now the kids who watched those episodes will talk about how they cried during those episodes.
But I'm not sure that'd happen, typically when you have a series these sorts of episodes only really work when we're at least somewhat familiar with the characters instead of it just being a CotD. They're not going to be remembered as "that time Ash said goodbye to his first catch", "that time Ash and his Pokemon decided they'd all be cold together", or "that time Meowth told his life story", it'll be "that time Bonnie had to say goodbye to a Pokemon she met that episode".
But then again, you can have it be a CotD and still have it work, but you need to have really good writing and direction. Let me make a bit of an unfair comparison. That Espurr episode had a good idea, but compare that to Jurassic Bark from Futurama or something.
