Round robin, so after 5 rounds for the OR/AS tourney, you get 3 points per game win (not match) and -1 point per loss. So if you lose a match 1-2, you still get one point. The top 8 point getters get offered gym leader spots

As of right now, there are 47 challengers listed in the document, last season there were closer to 75. That's a significant drop, and the whole concept of the tournaments is to determine the leaders for the challenge; the challenge is the main attraction here, not the tourney.
Side events make main events more popular all of the time, it's called advertising and promoting. If other people get involved with the mini tournaments because it's based around something the generally enjoy, that will then inspire them to stick around for the monotype tournament. You said the people who show up for the mini events 'likely' won't give two shits about the main one, but that's very arguable. It's likely they will, considering it will be run in a similar style, and the threads and contest is enjoyable.

Just FYI to people discussing the timeline here between now and ORAS-
No one "owns" the monotype tourneys or gym challenge as a whole (aside from that gym leaders run their gyms).
If someone was so inclined to handle pairings, docs, etc, you're more than welcome to run another season's mono tourney between now and ORAS.
Just keep in mind, there WILL be mini events being run in this thread during this time, the season will need to end upon ORAS release, and you will likely want to make appropriate adjustments to accommodate a relatively smaller crowd (I.E. maybe a single-phase tourney instead of separating type reps for finals, to avoid potentially competitionless (or nearly-so) type rep slots; but this would be your responsibility to sort).
