Now, if you want to stand a chance at the league, you need a mega and a fully-evolved competent team.
At kanto, even with the excuse of only 150 pokes, you would see lots of bullshit like bellsprout with shenanigans, bulbasaur, grimer, growlithe and so. The champion had an IVYSAUR, and a fully evolved mon was considered an incredible powerhouse.
Charizard was the strongest mon at the league and ash was set to win the league because of it.

I don't know about the hobby fair, which is specifically for kids. The Tokyo Toy Show, Jump Festa and the like is aimed at a wider audience, and the Banpresto Prize Fair is primarily for adults and draws lot of foreign investors.
