Everyone watched the first episode..We were so hyped for the next episode. Everyone collected the cards trying to get that holographic charazard. I don't remember anyone who didn't collect the cards back then.
There is not really a way to describe how big of a impact this show had on kid culture in America back in 96 and 97.Biblical is the only way to describe it. Burger king and even KFC had pokemon toys for the kids. Products started putting ash and pikachu on edibles. Hell, even the tooth paste companies hopped on the bandwagon and put pokemon on their products. When one of the major airlines painted pikachu and jiggly puff on their plane, it was a big thing, it was all over the news for weeks. Then the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade had their first pokemon themed float. They played the Pokemon theme song when it passed and it gave me chills.
It objectively was the biggest thing to ever hit kid culture. Then the second gen came out and the hype started to die down. Most kids began to watch DBZ then tried to relive that feeling by collecting yu gi oh cards but it wasn't the same because that fad only lasted a year. Then 9/11 happened and things changed. I assume now there are cliques that still collect cards and play the games, but it wasn't like back then when it was new and everyone went hungry because they saved their lunch money for the cards.

Well, now that I've actually seen the latest episode instead of pretending I did, I can say he handled it pretty well, in consistence with his character in XY so far: very maturely, although he obviously took it hard, considering so far in the season he's seldom been looked down on his battle prowess until now. Still strategic a bit, but I guess he was more "in it to win it" because of the circumstances.
