I have a source within development of Sun and Moon. There will be a dog pokémon with what appears to be designed in an origami-like style. It will have the normal typing and an ability that will allow players to draw directly on it. The ability will also effect a pokemon's stats depending on the color and pattern design the player makes. This ability is exclusive to this pokemon only.

Wouldn't it be nice if Pokemon of the same species from different regions had slightly different designs, stat differences, or learned different moves? It'd make trading Pokemon a bit more exciting for those that don't usually trade up.

they touched on this with that sea slug thing didn't they? pokemon seems to be full of really awesome but ultimately half-baked ideas that just get left in the dust.
the most puzzling thing about the franchise is why they don't carry the most successful ones into new installments. going to a new region after beating the elite 4, having any pokemon follow you outside of a pokeball, pokemon amie, your example of regional differences, they just put them in once and then never look at them again. just doesn't make sense.
Why not take the vivillom route where real life regional locations affected Pokemon anatomy and maybe moveset/stats (+/-3 to each stat nothing drastic) if it could be effectively balanced

I've already decided. When I finally boot up my copy of Pokemon Sun/Moon (haven't decided yet), when I get to the title screen, I'm going to turn the volume off and just sit and listen to "Vacation" once, all the way through. It just seems appropriate.

So how do you feel about Sun and Moon not having Gyms?
They might, they might not. I like them breaking the mold, it opens up to better storytelling in my opinion, because they technically don't have to put a town and gym battle in the middle of your quest, you'd be able to go to one plot point to the next and have smoother transitions between them.

The last three past generation remakes were on different hardware than the previous ones (AKA one per handheld; FRLG for the Game Boy Advance, HGSS for the Nintendo DS, and ORAS for the Nintendo 3DS). I'm not sure they're going to break that trend.
