How to progress in PTCGO, tl;dr edition:

>farm Versus Mode theme ladder for Tokens and Tournament Tickets
>Enter Theme format tournaments whenever possible

It could be as simple as Easy, Hard, and maybe like Master or some shit. Just amp up the AI, lower EXP and higher opponent Pokemon levels/amount of Pokemon on team.
