I don't think they're free at all. They were children, and while the Puppet and the nature of their deaths forced them into the animatronics, they could just as easily be bound to the location. A common belief concerning spirits is that hauntings are caused by those who died suddenly or left our world with unfinished business. It could be that the children are locked into the location until they exact their revenge against the Purple Man; after all, even with the animatronics destroyed they were still capable of chasing him until he had no chocie but to hide inside of Springtrap.
Maybe with the place burning down they'll find peace. Or maybe they'll continue haunting the place like some Indian Burial Ground until the Purple Man's soul is gone for good.

You mainly have to play the BB audio clips in rooms close to Springtrap to lure him away from your office. When you see him in the vents double click on them to secure them and stop Springtrap from going through. Basically have to do that and make sure to reboot the systems when they go offline.

Robot starts from one end of the place and advances toward you. You can distract him using a voice recording in different rooms, or block him using the air vents.
Your ventilation, cameras, and audio wear down the more you use them, and you need to repair them. Not repairing audio and cameras keeps you from using them, while not repairing ventilation causes Phantoms to appear more frequently.
Phantoms are spirits that are triggered by seeing something in the environment, each is different for each phantom. When you see one, you get a jumpscare and your vision flashes for a bit. BB, Chica, Foxy, and Freddy's Phantoms damage your systems, while the Puppet's Phantom hovers over your screen for a while, leaving you vulnerable.
Between each level is a minigame explaining the game's lore. Also, there are other minigames hidden throughout the game. Completing them a certain way will give you the good ending.

You'll have to go from instinct, the wiki has NOT been updated, like at all, and I haven't played, but here's what I noticed :

I like the idea of Spring serving as more a catalyst holding Purple's soul, like a soul gem with a few cracks. Occasionally Purps slips through and kills a few people, but Spring him/herself could have any variety of personalities OR be an old robot. Plenty of OC stretching opportunities that way.

How terrifying has that got to be? This guy already killed them once, probably gruesomely with not a shred with mercy. And then he comes back and singlehandedly disassembles and 'kills' them again despite the fact that most other people would probably get killed by them easily.
The fact that he disassembles them specifically makes me wonder why, though. Was he planning on hiding in Springtrap? Was he luring the animatronics in to ambush them? Did he have something secret in the boarded up bathrooms? And why on Earth was he back there killing the Animatronics?

The spirits of the children are in the animatronics in FN@F1. Their disrupt spirits inside these animatronics try to kill you. Ok, now Marionette comes into play. Who is that? Or who's spirit is in Marionette? And my understanding is that Golden Freddy and SpringTrap are originally 2 body suits meant to be worn andThe murderer seen at the end puts on the SpringTrap suit and it ends up killing him. And so his evil spirit inside Spring Trap is what is trying to kill you in the 3rd game?To me it seems these minigames or what I call 8-bit lore sessions seem to be what leads up to the 3rd game and why this asshole is coming after you in the 3rd game. As much as I love the mystery and love behind this series, one thing in particular sticks out as pretty lame to me. It's perhaps the greatest irony of the series.
It's called Five Nights at Freddy's. Yet Freddy himself is barely relevant or important in lore now. Springtrap/Purple Guy killed the kids, Marionette gave all their souls lives or whatever and even Bonnie is arguably more important, what with this shadow Bonnie business.
I remember when the first game was released, Freddy was the master trickster. Everyone played him up as knowing every move you would do, as he ruthlessly toyed around with you. Now he's just one of the rest of the animatronics. It's a bit of a shame, really.

Each night he'll choose a different role to act as:
