Depends on the demons you have with you, but 85 is definitely doable. You need to groom your demons for each specific fight, and know if buffs will or won't work on that fight. Hint: Matador gets Dekunda and Dekaja, and uses Sukukaja, Taunt, and Antichthon. Silent Prayer is good here, Debilitate and Luster Candy not so much. At least he's weak to Electric so you have something to hit for press turns; unfortunately he also has 16k HP.
Good luck man, and remember: if it's your first time finding them and you die, you need to get sent back by Charon or you'll have to hope RNG lets you find them again. After you pay Charon the first time you can save and repeatedly fight, reloading the save if you lose, without them disappearing - but they still disappear if you leave the area IIRC.

My personal favorite Persona. The story and characters are great, but the gameplay can be boring. The dungeons are better than P3/P4, but not as good as P1.

So I started DDS earlier - my first SMT game based on recommendations here and elsewhere - fun so far but I have absolutely no idea what to do with my mantras now that I've unlocked the ability to level them. I've been told its good to focus on the elemental tree opposite the demon's innate element, like go fire for Seph, but how far should I take it and should I make it my priority? Also should everyone have hunt abilities or what? Any general tips would be appreciated. I'm going wjth a magic heavy build for Serph at each level up I've already decided.
I almost wonder if Persona 3 or Nocturne wouldn't be better starts. They seem a little less intimidating.

I'd honestly recommend SMTIV, it's the gentlest introduction into mainline by only raping you for the first two dungeons (Upper and Lower Naraku)

Be sure each character has "Void [skill that they're weak against]". You can build up to higher skills later on, where eventually they can get a resist that is always active, but you won't need that for a long time.
I got by with only devour, but it does help significantly to get stronger hunt skills.
Build each character to how their stats are geared (build Serph however you want, gear Heat towards physical attacks, build argilla towards magic)
Also get boost skills and debuff skills (debuffs are in the expel mantras, I think boosts are their own)
Magic on Serph is fine, that's what I went with.

I'd say give everyone a hunt ability. Ideally ever enemy in a random encounter should be killed by a hunt ability, you unlock mantras faster that way. Also hunt abilities deal almighty damage, basically non-elemental meaning it's almost guaranteed to deal damage if nothing else on that character's current movelist is working.
Also, like all MegaTen games, using buffs and debuffs are just as important as hitting enemy's weakness.

The difference with Minotaur is that at those low levels you have very few options. MC can't get Phys resist armor, and you only have two demons available who resist Phys (one of whom is level 1), and you have no way of Nulling Phys to steal press turns. You lack any form of MP recovery and you fight him after the 5th floor of Naraku, you don't have Concentrate or any buffs or debuffs that apply more than one buff or debuff at a time (whereas Minotaur gets War Cry), and you can get Walter for your partner which basically resigns you to taking a Smirked Labrys Strike.
Compare this to, say, King Kenji, who is a hard bossfight but you can get Fire, Dark, and Physical Null on your demons to steal press turns; you can give MC accessories to make Ancient Curse suck less or have methods of dealing with it like Amrita. Unless Kenji decides to spam Megidola, nothing about the fight feels unreasonable. Fighting Minotaur with Walter at a time when your demon and skill pool resembles the shallow end of a rain puddle can feel unreasonable.

Chaos: Top demons are nietzschean ubermensch that you "worship" in the form of looking up to and striving to be like. Very anti essentialist in that demons and humans aren't treated much differently. They should live together since anyone should just do anything. Thus low level ones are treated like your comrades. You worship high level ones together, while seeking to emulate them, and hopefully eventually become ubermensch yourselves.
Neutral: deistically. Neutral for the most part wants demons and humans to live separately. They accept that humans can draw inspiration from them from a difference, but want the relations to for the most part end there. Sometimes they vaguely have relations with a few demons who they respect more than others since those are the ones who keep away the ones who want to disrupt the separation of the human and demon worlds. Some neutrals might worship some demons. Some not.
Law: as "technical" equals, since the great will is seen as so great that everyone else should have a sense of humility in relation to it. "good" law demons are messengers who carry the divine light to humans, and may even represent it, but are not necessarily to be worshiped themselves separately from it. There are however some law "gods" who are payed respect individually from the great will, but this may be more akin to things like catholic saint veneration. law demons may help transform the world, but won't necessarily always live with humans.

Technically that kind of makes sense. "satan" in the sense of the law aligned one refers to samael. Which samael has hordes of interpretations of him obviously. Samael is also known as being teh consort of lilith. Lilith in older games appears holding a snake. That snake is samael, which is technically the same demon as satan. Making him appear as part of three different demons technically.

Depending on your point of view, that one could ALSO be spun as making sense in an indirect way. Buddhism for some reason sways towards chaos in representation in the games. This is in part since law represents its spirituality as "complying with the universal order" and chaos represents its spirituality often as "breaking free from the detrimental samsara / demiurge / detrimental order / etc."
In Buddhism, you're trying to break free from samsara. Mara is trying to keep you bound to it. So you could arguably spin that as a form of evil law? Obviously in actual buddhism, samsara is seen as more chaotic, and your extinguishing could be said to be law. But either way.
It is kind of odd that both the "good" and "bad" buddhist things get shunted towards chaos.
