Hugo edition
_____

Note: the general consensus at /kspg/ is that you should torrent the game, rather than purchasing it. The developer, Squad, is incompetent, extremely mismanaged, and is very resistant to all feedback or criticism. Furthermore, the game itself is poorly made, lacks a proper development team, and is in need of a serious physics and optimization overhaul, something that Squad is likely never to give it. In fact, we at /kspg/ believe that they are planning on abandoning development of the game altogether at some point within the next year. They do not deserve your shekels.

Understand that we here at /kspg/ don't hate KSP. We've simply grown bitter over the direction (or lack thereof,) that Squad has taken it in.

/kspg/, I just woke up from the weirdest dream (or was it a nightmare?), I dreamt of a KSC many times greater than the one we know today, more of a KAX, on the outskirts of Kerbin City. It was like a one great DMP server, and all the billies’ planes flew all about.

Every once in awhile, a massive rocket would take off from one of a dozen full-sized pads. Little buggies and other vehicles dot the landscape. An ssto comes ripping across the sky, back from a milk run to a station—no—an orbital anchorage. The ssto's rear cabin was full of little billy kerbals, yet to make it to orbit, who want to see what it’s like. They each paid 1000 roots for the journey.

In the far outer territories, battles occur for territory, but here, all is relatively quiet. That is, until one particularly foolish child makes supermassive column of fuel and fucks up his staging. The city is bathed in the light of a mushroom cloud. An explosion rips across the vicinity and can be heard in Kerbin City, albeit faintly. All activity dies down for a moment, but only for a moment as it resumes where it left off.

http://web.mit.edu/sydneydo/Public/Mars%20One%20Feasibility%20Analysis%20IAC14.pdf

http://www.examiner.com/article/mit-study-finds-fault-wit-mars-one-colony-concept

>The study made the bottom line conclusion that the Mars One project is overly optimistic at best and unworkable at worst. The concept is “unsustainable” given the current state of technology and the aggressive schedule that the Mars One project has presented.

>“Mars One’s claim that ‘no new major developments or inventions are needed’ does not withstand scrutiny and that assessment is only for the habitation, life support, in-situ resource utilization and space transportation technologies. The MIT team notes that they did not address other required systems such as entry, descent and landing (EDL), the power system architecture, or the surface-to-orbit communications strategy.

>“If crops grown on Mars are the only food source, they will ‘produce unsafe oxygen levels in the habitat’ resulting in the first crew fatality after about 68 days due to ‘suffocation from too low an oxygen partial pressure within the environment,’ the consequence of a complex series of events stemming from overproduction of oxygen by the plants.

“The MIT team postulated solutions to that problem that are not part of the Mars One plan (e.g. relying on stored food brought from Earth, creating a separate plant growing facility, or using yet-to-be invented oxygen removal technology). If a way were found to sustain a Mars One habitat for 130 months, the paper concludes that spare parts would require 62 percent of the mass brought from Earth over that period of time.”

Even MIT thinks resources and base building are bad concepts.

Source? First off, Natural Selection may have diminished in humans, but sexual selection still exists and is a VERY strong source still. Many people die virgins these days.

Also, increase in life expectancy would lead to more diversity and more genetic mutations, which would better facilitate speciation and divergent evolution. Humans will evolve. They may not die out, but they certainly will evolve, probably be different species sometime within the next million years.

>Technology makes us stupid, not smart.

No, I'm pretty sure people are just as intelligent as they were 500 years ago. Most people couldn't even read 500 years ago, now nearly everyone can read. The amount of information available out there is insane. Your average person knows WAY more about the world than they did before technology. Intelligence is based more on upbringing and genes, which is pretty static. People are still inventing crazy shit, there are still quantum physicists out there, there are still nuclear engineers, there are still rocket scientists.

Please stop with your pessimistic, inaccurate bullshit

>Reddit

No. I'm just not retarded. Sexual Selection is a thing and was in the origin of species, and described by Darwin to be the most important part of human evolution.

>Wow, memorization! what a stunning criterion for intelligence! I guess now that apes can read they must be so much smarter than they were a hundred years ago!

You said smart, not intelligent. Smart includes knowledge, knowledge has grown tremendously since the middle ages.

>Who find particles that exist for an attosecond. Wooo!~
What's your point? Because we're not constantly inventing new things like in the renaissance we're some how worse off? What do you think a golden age is?

>Who people won't go near because radiation is seen as a witch's curse by the populace.

Radiation is incredibly dangerous. Most people are right to avoid it because it causes cancer or worse. I'm saying there are still very smart people who know how to deal with radiation and convert it into usable energy or other endeavors.

>And they work 80 hour weeks on shit pay just to make musk's nose grow.

What's your point? I'm saying there's plenty of smart people, and the average intelligence has not changed with technology. Dumb people are still dumb, smart people are still smart.

>b-b-but I watched Idiocracy
Which is a fictional movie that sounds like it makes sense, but it's completely baseless.
>>
>>82911919
You are right. Sexual selection is a powerful evolutionary factor. Just look at something like a peacock.

It's feather display is entirely a sexual evolution tool and doesn't contribute to flight, camouflage, or any of the survivalist attributes people normally associate with evolution.

Survival is only part of evolution. Successfully passing on your DNA is the most important part.

How are people going to be smarter from sexual selection? If anything, it's only going to worsen our issues. Look at how our shit morals affect everything.

>You said smart, not intelligent. Smart includes knowledge, knowledge has grown tremendously since the middle ages.

so apes are smarter now than 100 years ago because some can read? You know this future you keep parading about isn't available in most countries where most of the people live?

>What's your point? Because we're not constantly inventing new things like in the renaissance we're some how worse off? What do you think a golden age is?

Quantum mechanics has only produced one useful invention, the semiconductor. That's it. It's useless and pointless and it's hilarious how many kids are stuck as perpetual postdoc because we don't even have half as many labs as we have researchers because the science is worthless beyond academic interest.

>Radiation is incredibly dangerous

No it isn't. You must have seen how people panicked when they thought that one tide chart was a radiation chart from fukushima. Nobody knows what a becquerel is so just shut up. All the science education of the last 20 years has done is give everyone their own idea of how the world works.

>What's your point? I'm saying there's plenty of smart people, and the average intelligence has not changed with technology. Dumb people are still dumb, smart people are still smart.

So smart people are sequestered away in dead end tasks because science fiction santa said they could have warp drive if they were good this year. Well that sure makes me happy to think about.

>Which is a fictional movie that sounds like it makes sense, but it's completely baseless.

What the fuck are you on about?

>Well keep moving that goalpost and eventually you'll score.

I thought this entire discussion was about progress. I pointed out progress and you argue by saying "Well it's only progress"

>Look up a guy named Eratosthenes

Determined the size of the Earth, of course I've heard of him. You seemed to only be concerned with practical advancements, though.

>What about all the millions who died from fukushima caesium water washing ashore? Remember that panic? Remember when every smart fellow in the first world bought out the iodine pill supply because of this TIDAL chart that they misinterpreted to be radiation?

Just because people overestimated the danger of one nuclear meltdown doesn't mean radiation isn't dangerous. Why do you think you have to wear a lead vest now when you go to take x-rays? Are you seriously this retarded?

>My point is they don't matter. Smart people don't make decisions. Their bosses do.

I don't think you have a point. You started off by saying people are getting dumber and not evolving. I pointed out how stupid that statement is. Now you're saying there are smart people, but they're held back by politics and bureaucracy

Please just go eat plutonium. It's not dangerous, and I think it's a great idea for you to do.

Not really. They had been aiming for a Mars mission starting in the 50's, and then, when the U.S. made a big deal about going to the Moon, they put aside a small project to use some of the infrastructure they were going to use for that (along with their space station program,) to develop a program to go to the Moon. The U.S. dumped much more money into it, however, and got to the Moon first, and then quickly threw all that away for a partially-reusable manned faring that served no real purpose.

The USSR just kept going with their established infrastructure to build on their Space Station program, which is still active today (Mir 2, began in '76, ended up becoming the Zvezda module of the ISS.)

That is a political issue, not a technological one. We currently operate the Delta IV heavy, the most powerful rocket in the world. It could carry humans to space if we wanted it to.

The Space X Dragon and Dragon II were both designed from the start to carry people. They could carry people if we wanted to.

Space X is working on the Falcon Heavy which will be even more powerful than the Delta IV Heavy.

The Orion capsule is going to be tested soon being launched by a Delta IV Heavy.

We have numerous systems online and about to come online that are far beyond any capabilities the soviets have.
