Not really, the tutorial is beyond trash and completely wrong. To play you only need to do the first mission that involves using your skills to clear creepwaves (don't do this on most cases).
After the tutorial, make a lobby and play around alone with a random hero, walk around the map, get used ot the commands, then boot up a normal bot game. Bot games are also incredibly misleading, but not as much as the tutorial. Read the welcome to dota you suck guide, if your friend from LoL wants to try again, show him http://www.liquiddota.com/forum/dota-2-strategy/454746-dota-2-for-lol-players . And look for recent Purge (this guy https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZsM8MOy0VC9blj_wBkbo-g) gameplay (not something from last year, the game changed too much, look for something like three months maximum).
