I've used Gold/Metal tires, but only in very specific instances. I used Metal tires for awhile with Daisy, because I had an extra 0.25 acceleration that was going to waste and the extra weight was handy for the lighter character. And of course, Gold tires on Metal Mario for the max weight.
Beyond that, Slim tires have the same speed and better acceleration, and give decent handling/traction by themselves. I doubt you'll see many Metal tires used by many people because of it.
P.S. Yoshi, Yoshi Bike, Sponge/Wood/Cushion tires, and a Cloud Glider should work well for a Yoshi inside drift bike.

Isn't he on right now? I seem to recall his name in the three-Rosalina room I was recently in.I almost got first in both Mario Stadium and Wario Stadium, only to be screwed at the end due to multiple reds, so it's certainly possible. I was Baby Daisy, so top speed was hardly a factor.

No, seriously, I doubt anyone knows. The acceleration values are tiered, such that you can only have a value of 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5. There is no fractional acceleration values (and no way to get 6 in any stat). As such, when putting together a kart, you should generally look at options which give you that solid X.00 number value in acceleration. Preferably with a Cloud Glider, so that the numbers in your other stats can be as high as potentially possible.

Triple reds should be limited to places where the person in front of you can get triple greens/bananas. There should be some way, at least in theory, to protect against them. 1st place has literally no defense against someone who pulled triple reds in 2nd, outside being so far ahead of everyone that no amount of stopping will matter.
