>It's not too late the kill the barn
edition

> Can the game be considered a full release?
No, for all intents and purposes, KSP should be considered still in early access state.
The game is nowhere near being able to stand on its own legs both from a gameplay perspective (career mode is definitely not ready and balanced) and a stability perspective.
There are still major bugs and memory leaks that shouldn't exist on a finished game.

> Are there big issues with the game?
Bugs and instability are still real and frequent problems, as with every product still in beta. Ask in thread for details.

> What are the devs doing?
Modified versions of popular mods are being included in the stock game while the game engine is being upgraded to its latest version. The next major update (1.1) is supposedly going to bring a complete overhaul of the GUI, be 64bit friendly, have a refined physics/heating/aero model and generally perform better.
An external team with heavily questionable experience (Flying Tiger Entertainment) is being tasked with porting the game to PS4, XboxOne and Wii U. They seem to be rushing for an imminent deadline and they are also working on a version of the game that will be obsolete in a few weeks/months.

> Should I buy the game?
KSP is very enjoyable at first, then it usually needs to be modded to retain some sort of longevity, but doing so may dramatically increase the instability of the game. You will be very familiar with the word "Oops!".
The Developers, Squad, have shown many times that they can't handle the project and are trying to squeeze all the money they can with the least amount of effort and with controversial PR tactics.
The general consensus at /kspg/ is that you shouldn't purchase the game, not because the game itself is unplayable, but because most of us agree that Squad does not deserve your money.

The problem is that the easily exploitable minerals in the Earth have already been depleted. A future civilisation, beginning from scratch, would have stone tools but no easy copper, iron or whatever deposits to mine, leaving them stuck forever in the stone age.

>>technological advance much faster by studying our old technology
Not sure how plausible that is, sadly. Advanced technology would effectively be magic to a primitive people (it's effectively magic to most of us, let's be honest) but maybe with simple things it could be done. All our technology would probably have degraded to uselessness long since anyway - how much stuff from the Greco-Roman era survived without being specifically preserved or transcribed? That's only 2000 years.

Laugh at my design, /kspg/.
For some reason it's just not generating enough thrust and lift. I can barely take off and maintain level flight near ground level, any maneuvers including turning or climbing will just cause it to stall.
I loaded up one of the default jets to compare, it uses mostly the same parts but has two engines instead of my six and goes faster, and less wing surface than mine but generates more lift at the same speed. Why?
>>
>>123966768

Thanks, it seems weight was the problem. Didn't realize that most of the default jet's fuselage is empty or just crew quarters and I packed mine full of fuel. Even though my jet is only a bit larger, it weighted 4 times as much.

I wish the surface of Jool looked like that. And I'm glad you like the idea.

Can you explain the logic behind the name "scatterer" -- I know what atmospheric scattering is but it seems like you're now going beyond just atmo.

What's your ultimate scope for this? Can you improve the shitty trees scattered across the landscape too?
>>
>>123970026
Could be done with a color map, to keep things simple.
I'm sure someone will tweak that when you'll release it.
>>
>>123970334
Basically I just picked a name that sounded good. There was a mod called "chatterer" at the time and my initial scope for the mod was to add atmospheric scattering so I thought why not call it scatterer.

After I had the basic proland atmospheric scattering running I realized I had set up most of the framework and it would be much easier to port more of the proland features over so I thought why not give it a try. Probably you're right about the name not really applying anymore but I like the name scatterer so I'll keep it for now.

I actually thought about doing the trees too but haven't investigated it seriously yet. I've seen a mod that makes the terrain scatter collidable but also changes the scatter models, I could probably start working off that. Better yet would be to disable that system and use the proland forest generator but I'm going to need the terrain heights for that and the PQS system is really slow for returning heights so it might not work for more than 20 trees at a time, Although I can imagine a LOD system for "tree heights".

Features I'm thinking about seriously include water interacting with craft, light shafts and full sunglare system replacement that supports any resolution and i s more tweakable than the unity flare system used right now.

>>123970392
>color map

You mean a color picker in the UI? Yeah probably I could add that, don't feel like looking for it now but I'll do it later.
>>
>>123971543
Does terrain scatter still cause memory leaks?
>>
>>123971543
More like a texture to map all the planet and color the water.
But I realize as I write this it might not be possible if the whole ocean has an uniform color.
I'll take a look at your shader and mess a lot with the code, if it's ok with you.
>>
>>123972124
Yeah knock yourself out.

Indeed the whole ocean has a uniform color which complicates things. I thought for local spots you could fade it in as you approach them and if the camera is below a certain altitude, when higher up it could all have a global ocean color.

This is a rocket. it's a nice rocket. It can fly to the moon. noone can build such beautiful rockets like me. Only I am capable of building such rockets. If you ever build a rocket it was not even close to this beauty. Many believe rockets were originally created by me. Because I build the prettiest rockets on the world. But this is a lie. Rockets were created by dr Oppenheimer. An african-american rocket scientist. I learned from him. His rockets were just like mine. Deadly and beautiful. My moon rockets aren't deadly though. These rockets are just beatiful. Beautiful rockets are my study subject. No other man ever build such beautiful rockets. Not even you, mr anon. My rockets have a nice little tip on the front to have some nice little rockets are great for transportation. Rocket. Building rockets my annoy some of you. But let me tell you. It's something only big man can do. Only me. Rockets are like space instruments of cute. Noone has ever saw one in real life yet. But that may change in the future when rockets rule over the world. That will be my rocket. Your future president of the rocket state. None shall defy his orders. My rocket is better than yours. Just remember that. Maybe you could learn from me though. I am more than willing to let you guys know how to create such beauty. You may not be a master like me at the end, but building rockets is, well, rocket science. I saw someone here once posting a rocket. It was quite ugly. I nearly puked. No rocket anyone posted here can compete with mine. You are just a bunch of pathetic hobby rocketeers while my genius is working beyond the limits of regular engineering. One time I even visited Obama, the President of half the world, and he told me I was fucking awesome. When I go to sleep I think about how noone can build beautiful rockets, except me.

For satellite delivery contracts, how the hell do you adjust the argument of periapsis? Wikipedia had some math on it, but I have no idea which direction should I burn to change it.
>>
>>124016767
just fiddle with the maneuver node until you get the desired orbit
>>
>>124017454
It also doesn't help that it's an equatorial orbit, and the ascending/descending nodes go half a circle for a 1m/s burn near the 0 degrees inclination.
>>
>>124018010
But those contracts are usually kinda forgiving, if you're less than, say 10 m/s off the desired orbit it takes it as good anyways. Check if you didn't forget any part on the ship or something the contract specified.

So why do you guys generally dislike career mode?
If the funds mechanics bother you, you can easily increase funds gain to 200% or more so you don't run out. The contracts are fun to do, it gives you some objectives other than "land on X planet". Also plenty of mods that add new contracts.

Badly designed and badly balanced, particularly the science system, tech tree and early progression. The contracts side of career has had nearly 100% of the developer attention while the science side is almost the same as when it was introduced two years ago. It was bad then (for a multitude of reasons) and its bad now.
>>
>>124031180
I liked the science part too. No reason to use low tech stuff in sandbox when you have far superior tools unlocked. It lets you (well, rather forces you) to try out every tech in the game as you progress slowly.
>>
>>124031480
A large proportion of tech tree progression is using larger diameter parts which are better than smaller parts simply by virtue of being larger. That means they are easier to build with, easier to manage in flight, and with the side effect of better performance in game thanks to lower part count. So with those things its already advantageous to unlock those parts, but KSP goes the extra mile and makes those parts outright better (in TWR+ISP) than smaller parts. This has the effect of making a shitload of the game redundant, but all that junk still fills up your editor making finding the good parts amid clutter annoying. Its also a trap for new players thinking the old parts are still useful.

This has been brought up many many many times as being "fucking stupid", its also boring since it leads to less player choice. And no, having the player choose from a blatantly inferior option or something good is not a choice. Heres a post on the forum that goes pretty in depth on this, from the point of view of the Vector (1.25m Shuttle engine added in 1.0.5) being OP as fuck. http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/index.php?/topic/124844-vector-engine-possibly-a-little-too-good/#comment-2268877

As for collection of science, its still a shitty rightclick/action group spam system where you have to guess when you're in a new biome, and is built so poorly for new players a common piece of advice is to fuck about in the KSC picking up bits of dirt rather than flying airplanes and spacecraft to actually progress in a game about flying airplanes and spacecraft.
>>
>>124032393
Is it so bad if there's a progression in technology and later parts are simply better? Sure, it gives you some redundant parts in sandbox, but it also gives a kind of a gameplay/progression feeling for science and career modes. It's also realistic, after all later technology is superior in real life too. You wouldn't send an Apollo today if you wanted to go to the Moon.

Tech progression also makes simple things challenging and feel meaningful. Getting to orbit isn't trivial with shitty rockets, and even if you can get to the Mun, there is good chance you won't be able to land and get back. So you can choose between sending a manned pod, looking around and coming home, or sending a probe, landing and not coming home. A few missions later and you can easily do round trips with heavy landers with better rockets.

>you have to guess when you're in a new biome
While the base game doesn't include that, the scansat mod gives you mid-game option to map planets. Conveniently it's around the same depth in the tech tree where you can reasonably start building landers that visit multiple locations instead of just land once and head home.
>>
>>124033593
>Is it so bad if there's a progression in technology and later parts are simply better?
>You wouldn't send an Apollo today if you wanted to go to the Moon.

Wrong.

Today we're still utilizing rocket systems developed in the 60's and 70's, or utilizing derivatives of those systems. Most improvements to rocketry since then have been primarily in materials (reducing payload/vehicle mass,) and in computer hardware. Look at China - their space station program is using a modernized Salyut station block.

A certain amount of development and creation of redundant parts is ok. That makes sense. But KSP has this problem with almost every part that has a larger counterpart - why use the smaller engine when there's a bigger one that can do the job better?
>>
>>124033593
>Is it so bad if there's a progression in technology and later parts are simply better?
It's arguable for either side, but when that progression is ALSO in size it becomes stupid. It gives you redundant parts in every game mode, though arguably the cost of things like the Vector counts more in career (though you can make recoverable SSTOs to really kill that cost in the first place). You can still have a sense of progression if you have upgradeable parts, and that would also help use some of the huge overabundance of science the game has (its literally infinite with contracts, but there is a "minimum" of around 400k). And the stock tech system is very far from realistic, thats not even an argument.
>using mods to overcome things that are shit in the main game (and have been for TWO YEARS)
You have to realise what you're saying here? And there is actually a way to see biomes in stock, with http://wiki.kerbalspaceprogram.com/wiki/Surface_Scanning_Module but it comes right near the end of the tree, I think only works on biomes (and not "situations" like high in space or whatever), and needs to be right-clicked to check it.

The game is way too reliant on right clicking.
>>
>>124034337
>why use the smaller engine when there's a bigger one that can do the job better?
Price? This is where funds come in. You could send up a satellite on Kerbin orbit for 30k. A single one of the higher end engines costs more than that. Completing various tasks with the cheapest vehicle can be a goal even in sandbox.
>>
>>124035642
You can make an SSTO capable of landing back at KSC and have the only cost be fuel, and you've completely nullified the high cost of those engines. That is exactly why the Rapier, Aerospike and Vector are so expensive.

Man, these struts are pretty powerful.
>>
>>124035642
>This is where funds come in.

It would be, if not for two things. Firstly, usage. If, for whatever reason, you decide you want to use a superheavy launcher, it's likely that you're more than capable of using it to multiple payloads into orbit - easily enough to make it cheaper than a large number of smaller launches on engines that are far less efficient in every way.
Second, is how easy it is to get funds. It's all fine and dandy that a single engine might cost more than an entire rocket, if that engine only costs you a couple of pennies out of your massive amount of money, there's only one choice in all reality.

The balancing of money in Career is just plain atrocious.
