It was (at least on PC). 100-200 players and little to no updates from the developers. If F2P can bring it back is unknown, but as of right now 18k people are playing it.

Every week, four hunters (one of each class) and one monster will be in the free rotation. There are currently 24 Hunters and 7 Monsters in total, though some are variations of others. By playing the character tutorials, you unlock one hunter (Markov) and one monster (The Goliath) to keep forever.
Additional monsters, hunters, perks, and skins are unlocked by earning silver keys. Silver keys are earned by playing the game, leveling up, or getting login bonuses. Currently you can't actually buy silver keys, presumably so they can test the unlock rate, but that's coming later.
There is also a monthly login bonus punch card. You get one punch for each day you log in. Beyond silver keys, this can directly award new Hunters and Skins.

You can buy the game and it to gives your account full founder benefits, which gives you 30k keys and most characters.

most of the characters are invalidated by the planet scanner & dome time reduction upon getting downed. Defensive-based hunters are now the best because they sustain until the dome goes down due to lost monster health
lazerus is useless because he excels at reviving downed teammates, but if teammates go down you've lost the dome.
cabot's dust has been made useless by planet scanner
kala and bucket lack defense, so they are useless compared to defense characters

So I never got to play Evolve before Stage 2 so I don't know if the game originally allowed this kind of play.
I've been reading the wiki just out of curiosity for bios and trivia and stuff, and it mentions the monsters stalking the hunters a lot.
Why doesn't Stage 2 allow the monsters to be able to stalk the hunters if they are stealthy enough? I still enjoy the game, but I wish the planet scan didn't make it a gotta go fast simulator only. It would be great to hide on walls as a Gorgon and set traps while watching the hunters go by and have no idea where you are.

And that's kinda the problem, you could spend the whole fucking 10 minutes without seeing the monster and he would come out of the wood lvl3 with his dick in his hand
You could see him lvl1 and miss the dome, which mean a wasted cooldown where the monster would be free for a long time
You could also murder the monster on the very first dome, sometimes very easily when you waited for him to evolve to trap him, because evolve consume all armor (Also called "Hold the dome")

Kala works well with hunters that can unload all at once when she takes the armor down. Some will say that sucks since the dome goes down faster, but it would have gone down faster anyways with the Armor timer, and then a little bit of health damage.
Even without the armor reducer, her siren missiles make her hands down the highest damaging support. Teleport pads can also mesh well with a Griffin having sound spikes all around, to hop to and from one part of the map to the other.

Web blast is great and pretty much forced hunters to land. Great for getting them with a spider or aciding them. It can also be used while retreating to stall hunters and ground them. Acid is strong and can be used to take out shield drones, traps etc with minimal investment. Always have a spider out. Mimic is pretty bad so feel free free to ignore it.

Adding onto what other anons said, sneaking up on a hunter and pouncing them was actually significant because the monster used to be able to down pounced hunters very quickly.
Can't have that though, so it was nerfed and now pounce only means shit if somebody is completely separated from their team, and even then you probably won't down them.

pounce should be fucking removed for the exact same reason Cloak was. It's a toxic game mechanic that FORCES control OUT of the players hands. Slims spore cloud was nerfed to the point it literally DOES NOT FUNCTION because it completely rendered an entire part of the monster unusable.
If you want to throw on a "monster must have taken no damage for 3 seconds in order to stealth pounce" that's fine, because then it actually is a surprise mechanic, not a mechanic that you can just suddenly do in combat to freely chunk 30% of someones health after you pushed them out of LoS of their buddies with an ability.
It's so easy as kraken to vortex lightning strike someone then go straight into a stealth pounce the moment the animation finishes.
or as Goliath to charge someone behind a rock or off a ledge then go straight into a pounce and easily take off 1/4th of their health from the pounce alone.

I agree combat is where it excels. It just feels a little stale right now following tracks or the scanner thing. There isn't really any strategy to catching the monster other than run in this direction. That is the worst part right now and you spend like 5min each game just running. I would like if they could make that a little more interesting at least. It's what is putting most people off the game btw if you read steam reviews.

Pouncing is fine because it's the "Don't fucking separate from your team" mechanic. It is literally a non-issue otherwise because all it takes is something farting in the general direction of the monster to free someone who was pounced. The damage is also pitiful now. Unless you run into someone being a special kind of stupid, or the other hunters are suffering from excessive retardation, it doesn't even translate into very much damage.
Hunters would be able to do some really stupid shit if the threat of pouncing wasn't present.
